The Mandela effect is a name for the phenomenon of many people misremembering the same thing, differently from reality, in an identical way.Around 2009, blogger Fiona Broome first used the term at the Dragon Con event.Broome named it after noticing that many people misremembered Nelson Mandela as having died in prison in the 1980s.In reality Mandela was released in the 1990s, became South Africa's first Black president in 1994, and died in 2013.Cases of people misremembering the children's book The Berenstain Bears' title as 'Berenstein' spread the phenomenon.Some researchers hold that there is no evidence the Mandela death false memory actually spread.
