Why is 666 tied to carbon?

How a first-century cipher ends up in the periodic table.

666 appears in Revelation 13:18.The verse calls it the number of a man and tells the reader to count it.In antiquity every letter had a numeric value, so a name could be turned into a number. Most biblical scholars read this number as the name of Emperor Nero written in Hebrew letters.

There is a second piece of evidence. Some early manuscripts read 616 rather than 666.Spelling Nero's name the Latin way and adding it up gives 616.The two numbers are two spellings of the same man.

The sources take another road.A carbon atom has 6 protons, 6 neutrons and 6 electrons. That is true of carbon-12, and it is correct. From there they conclude that since all life is carbon, humanity is the number of the beast.

The Star of David is pulled in the same way.Overlap two triangles and you get six points, six triangles and six sides.Six three times is read as 666.The hunt for hidden sixes in corporate logos follows from here.

Numbers matching and things being related are not the same.Six is a small number, so it appears anywhere depending on what you choose to count. The person deciding what to count is the writer.
