Bohemian Grove is a 2,700-acre private property in Northern California.It grew out of a summer camp started in 1872 by the Bohemian Club, a group of San Francisco journalists and artists.Each July, members gather for two or three weeks of talks, performances, and outdoor activities.Multiple Republican U.S.presidents are reported to have had ties to the club since 1923.Records show early discussions of the Manhattan Project took place there in 1942.The opening ceremony includes a "Cremation of Care" rite in which an effigy is burned before a 40-foot owl statue.
