Anunnaki
Also called: Nibiruans · Sumerian Gods · Anunnaki Gods
A group of gods that appears in Sumerian clay tablets. In this narrative, they are an alien race from Nibiru, and the creators who made humankind.

Established facts
The Anunnaki are a group of gods named in Sumerian mythology. They appear in cuneiform tablet records under names like Anu, Enlil, and Enki.In 1976, Zecharia Sitchin's book The 12th Planet reread these gods as an alien race.Sitchin studied economics at the University of London, worked as a journalist in Israel, and later taught himself to read cuneiform. He claimed a planet called Nibiru orbits beyond Neptune on a 3,600-year cycle and that the Anunnaki came from there.Historians and linguists say his cuneiform translations are wrong and classify the theory as pseudohistory.Even so, his books have sold millions of copies in more than 25 languages.
There is no Nibiru and no genetic experiment on any Sumerian tablet. Sitchin's translation is the bridge.
In this narrativeNibiru and the miners
Sitchin writes that the Anunnaki came to Earth to mine gold to fix pollution on their world1.He dates this to 450,000 years ago1.Lower-ranking Anunnaki grew exhausted from mining labor and rebelled1.Their leader Enki proposed mixing clay with Anunnaki genes to make humans1.Seven pairs of men and women were born through the womb of the midwife goddess Ninhursag1.The first human's name was "Adamu," which later became the Hebrew "Adam"1.
In this narrativeThree attempts to wipe out humanity
The eldest son, Enlil, grew displeased with humanity's growth and interbreeding with the Anunnaki1.He tried a plague to destroy humans, but Enki stopped it1.He caused a six-year drought, but that failed too1.Finally he unleashed a great flood1.Enki warned Utnapishtim in advance and saved him1.This storyline sits alongside the biblical account of Noah's flood.
In this narrativeGods returning
Some online posts claim the Anunnaki are about to return to Earth1.In this post, the Anunnaki are not reptiles but mammals with six fingers and toes1.It equates the Old Testament's Yahweh with the Anunnaki leader Enlil1.Jesus is rewritten as a demigod savior named "Joshua"1.The post ends with a prophecy that their return will topple the "New World Order"1.Its only cited source is a single line: "I heard it from people at the Pentagon."
In this narrativeMerging with the Archons
Another branch links the Anunnaki with the Archons of Gnosticism1.It cites the Nag Hammadi texts discovered in Egypt in 1945 as grounding1.The "Archons" of those texts are reinterpreted as beings that feed on human psychic energy1.It claims these Archons came from a reptilian, Draconian race in Orion1.All of Abrahamic religion is treated as a leftover of that control device1.As a solution, it urges a return to Gnosticism1.
Connected concepts
- Reptilians →Both the returning-Anunnaki post and the Archon-merger post mention a reptilian race. The gods of myth and alien reptiles keep overlapping.
- David Icke →Icke also calls the reptilian race he describes the "Anunnaki." Sitchin's name enters Icke's system.
- Ancient Astronauts →Sitchin's Nibiru theory is classified as one branch of ancient astronaut theory. It widens the frame that reads ruins as alien evidence to include myth itself.
- Archons and the Demiurge →One name, "Archon," carries the Anunnaki story over into Gnostic texts.Sumerian mythology gets bundled with ancient Greek writings.
- Gnosis →The Gnosticism offered as a solution is the next concept. The Anunnaki story's exit leads to gnosis.
