"Firmament" is the word used in Genesis 1:6-8.The original Hebrew is "raqiya." Its root, "raqa," means to hammer something flat.Ancient Near Eastern texts drew the sky as a solid covering.They believed water sat above that covering.The King James Bible rendered this word with the English "firmament," meaning "a solid thing." Modern biblical scholarship reads the firmament not as a physical dome but as the ancient world's cosmological model.Dome roofs have been a common architectural form for churches and government buildings since the Roman Pantheon.
